Timeline and procedure for Ukraine military death compensation claim
There is no fixed guaranteed timeline. Duration depends on available documentation, case complexity, and Ukrainian authorities' response times. Here is what to expect at each stage.
Is there a deadline to file the claim?
Ukrainian law does not establish a short statute of limitations for these claims, but starting the process as early as possible is advisable for two reasons:
- Military records and documents are more accessible in the months following the death
- Ukrainian authorities prioritize active files; the earlier you start, the sooner your case enters the review queue
Phases and estimated durations
| Phase | Description | Estimated duration |
|---|---|---|
| Initial form | Complete and submit the initial application with basic documentation | 1–2 weeks |
| LDV evaluation | Case review, identification of missing documentation | 1–2 weeks |
| Document gathering | Obtaining apostilles, translations, notarized powers of attorney | 4–12 weeks |
| Legal file preparation | Full legal review, claim preparation | 2–4 weeks |
| Submission to authorities | Formal filing with competent Ukrainian authorities | 1–2 weeks |
| Official verification | Review by authorities, possible additional requests | 4–16 weeks |
| Decision | Approval or denial. If approved, payment process begins | Variable |
| Payment | Transfer to enabled bank account | 4–12 weeks after decision |
Factors that extend the process
- Incomplete documentation — each missing document generates an additional request from the authorities, potentially adding weeks.
- Unapostilled foreign documents — documents without proper legalization must be returned and resubmitted.
- Multiple beneficiaries without agreement — conflicts between family members can suspend the process until resolved.
- Undocumented military status — cases where service or combat death are poorly documented require additional military record queries.
- Martial law context — during martial law, some administrative offices operate with reduced capacity.
Factors that speed up the process
- Complete documentation correctly legalized from the start
- A single clearly identified beneficiary
- Death documented by the unit and registered in Ukrainian systems
- Notarized power of attorney already available for Ukrainian representative
Realistic total timeline
In cases with relatively complete documentation and no complications, the process from start to payment can take between 6 and 18 months. In cases with incomplete documentation, multiple beneficiaries, or complex verifications, it may extend further.
Legado de Valor does not control Ukrainian authorities' timelines. Our role is to prepare the strongest possible file to minimize avoidable delays.
