Documents needed to claim military death compensation in Ukraine
The compensation file requires documentation across several categories. In the initial phase only the basics are needed; the rest is completed during the legal procedure with an assigned lawyer.
Phase I — Initial form documents
- Claimant's passport — clear copy of all pages with personal data.
- Deceased's passport — if available. The process can start without it.
- Death certificate — or equivalent document. Optional at this stage.
- Document proving family link — birth certificate, marriage certificate, or court ruling.
Phase II — Full legal procedure documents
Group 1: Identity
- Valid passport of the claimant (all pages)
- Additional identity document if passport has expired
- Proof of current residence (in some cases)
Group 2: Family relationship
- Claimant's birth certificate
- Deceased's birth certificate
- Marriage certificate (if applicable)
- Divorce decree (if applicable)
- Guardianship or adoption ruling (if applicable)
- Economic dependency documentation (if applicable)
Group 3: Death
- Death certificate issued in Ukraine
- Official notification of death from the military unit
- Any document certifying circumstances (medical report, unit report, etc.)
Group 4: Military service
- Military service contract
- Military ID or credential
- Service record extract
- Unit documents identifying the soldier's assignment
If military documentation is unavailable, the file can still be opened. There are legal procedures to request documents from Ukrainian military authorities.
Group 5: International legalization
All documents issued outside Ukraine must have:
- Apostille — under the Hague Convention (1961).
- Sworn translation into Ukrainian — by a certified translator. Automated or uncertified translations are not accepted.
- Notarization — in some cases, the translator's signature must be notarized.
Group 6: Representation
- Notarized power of attorney in favor of the representative or lawyer in Ukraine
- Explicit personal data processing consent
- Specific authorization to act before the competent authorities
What if I don't have all documents?
The file can be opened with partial documentation. During the evaluation phase, the team identifies exactly what is missing and how to obtain it. Missing military documents can often be formally requested from Ukrainian authorities with the assigned lawyer's support.
